On board the USS Avalon, the first space colony ship from Earth to the planet Nova Terra, an unexpected interaction between contraception and stasis systems renders 7/8ths of the men on board infertile. For a crew already leaning towards open marriage and polyamory, the answer is obvious. Each fertile man must impregnate 32 different women, and each woman must bear children to four of them, chosen to maximize genetic diversity.
